Paving on the Mountain

Asphalt paving on Casper Mountain is a different job from paving in town. The Casper Mountain community is a census-designated place at about 7,963 feet, and the mountain's summit reaches about 8,130 feet, roughly 3,000 feet above Casper. It sits at the north end of the Laramie Mountains. The CDP covered about 10.4 square miles and had 401 residents in 2010, many of them in homes and cabins tucked into the trees.

Wetter and colder

The mountain averages about 27.1 inches of precipitation a year, more than double what falls in town, and January highs average only about 28 degrees. Snow stays longer, and the paving season is shorter. We schedule mountain jobs for the warmest weeks of summer, when hot mix can be compacted properly.

Steep driveways

Most mountain driveways climb or drop. Water runs down them during storms and snowmelt, and without proper grading it cuts along the edges and undercuts the asphalt. We set cross slope to move water off, compact base in lifts and place asphalt quickly on grades.

Access and hauling

Hauling hot asphalt up the mountain takes time, and the mix cools along the way. We plan loads and timing so material arrives hot enough to compact. Hauling distance is one of the bigger cost factors for mountain jobs.

Wildfire history

The September 2012 Sheep Herder Hill fire burned 15,887 acres on the mountain and destroyed 37 homes and 23 outbuildings. Clear, paved access helps with defensible space and emergency access, which is one reason some owners pave long drives.

Roads and access

The mountain is largely privately owned, and roads may be county or private. We sort out who owns the road before any work at the connection.
